Dr. Terry Rathman
After two years
of piano lessons and desire to quit, his musically inclined mother insisted he would
learn to play a musical instrument. Being only 10 at the time, he thought
she couldn’t afford a trumpet, but he didn’t know about the rent-to-buy program
(neither did his younger brothers). They eventually
played trumpet trio selections for several years mainly at churches in the
Northeast, even when they attended college. While in college, the
mellophone (marching band) and French horn (concert band) were added to his
brass ‘repertoire’. Although he put the horns to rest for almost 20
years, during that time the harmonica, which was learned in less than an hour,
became a novelty instrument to fill the music void in his head. The dust
was shaken off the horns in the late 80’s when his church was seeking
‘volunteers’ for a Christmas orchestra and the horns (and harps) once again
became part of his life. During the past several years, a month doesn’t
go by without making a joyful noise somewhere for Him. Thanks to his good
friend, Leary Cleor, who was the lead trumpet with The Stardusters, invited him
to play with them. Playing with these fine musicians is fun and has
strengthened his musical prowess, which will always remain modest.
Terry’s day job is
chemical engineering.
