James Smith
James is a native of Gastonia.
With a father whose family entertained York County farmers with a stringed band and a
brother who was proficient in Tenor Saxophone, well… it’s only natural that
some of that talent rubbed off on him.
James began studying piano at age five, and went on to master the pipe
organ while in high school. He has been
a member of numerous choral groups including church choirs at First United
Methodist since his childhood and currently sings bass in the adult choir as well
as acting as the church’s substitute organist.
He is also no stranger to vocal solo work and takes a turn on stage at
local theaters.
James has two grown sons who are both very talented
musicians, playing a variety of guitars and keyboard as well as composing and
singing. James’s wife Jane holds down
the alto voice part of the family and also sings in the adult church choir
frequently as a soloist. As a CPA, James
has had careers in public accounting, construction and engineering and is
currently the CFO for the Gaston County Family YMCA.
Three grandchildren round out a family group proud to have
James playing keyboard with the StarDusters big band.
